FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our jewelry, ordering process, and care guidelines.

Ordering

  • How long does it take to receive my order?

Most pieces are made to order and take 1–2 weeks to craft before shipping. Ready-to-ship items in our Ships Now collection are dispatched within 1–2 business days. Once shipped, domestic orders typically arrive within 3–5 business days.

  • What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Shop Pay. For larger purchases, we also offer installment payments through Affirm.

  • Will I receive order confirmation and tracking?

Yes. You'll receive an email confirmation when your order is placed, and another email with tracking information once your piece has shipped.

  • Can I modify or cancel my order after placing it?

Please contact us at admin@fadetoblackjewelry.com as soon as possible. We can accommodate changes if production hasn't begun, but once a piece is in progress, modifications may not be possible.

Ring Sizing

  • How do I find my ring size?

We recommend visiting a local jeweler for the most accurate measurement. You can also use our Ring Size Guide which includes a printable ring sizer and measuring instructions. For a quick online option, try findmyringsize.com.

  • What if my ring doesn't fit?

Most rings can be resized. We offer resizing for a $50 fee. Contact us within 7 days of receiving your order and we'll arrange the adjustment. Please note that some designs with stones set around the entire band may have sizing limitations.

  • Do your rings run true to size?

Yes, our rings are crafted to standard US sizing. If you're between sizes, we generally recommend sizing up for wider bands and sizing down for thinner bands.

  • Can I order a ring without knowing the size?

For surprise proposals, we suggest ordering in the most common size (6 or 7 for women) and taking advantage of our resizing service after the proposal. Contact us if you need guidance.

About Our Opals

  • What makes Australian opals special?

Australian opals, particularly those from Lightning Ridge, are considered the finest in the world. They're solid, natural stones known for their brilliant play of color and durability. Our opals are sourced directly from miners we've worked with for generations and cut in-house by our master gem cutter with over 40 years of experience.

  • Are your opals solid or doublets/triplets?

All of our opals are solid, natural Australian opals — never doublets or triplets. Solid opals are more durable and valuable than composite stones.

  • Can I wear my opal jewelry in the shower?

While our solid Australian opals are more durable than other types, we recommend removing jewelry before showering. Soaps can dull the surface over time and impact the setting integrity.

  • Are opals durable enough for everyday wear?

Solid Australian opals are surprisingly durable for everyday wear. However, like all gemstones, they should be protected from hard impacts. We recommend removing opal jewelry during activities like exercising, gardening, or cleaning.

  • Why does each opal look different?

Every opal is unique — formed over millions of years with its own distinct pattern and play of color. This is part of their magic. The piece you receive may vary slightly from product photos, but we select each stone for its exceptional quality and beauty.

Bespoke & Custom Orders

  • How does the custom design process work?

It begins with a consultation — via Zoom, phone, or in person in Los Angeles or Sydney. We discuss your vision, select stones together (you'll receive photos and videos), and then handcraft your piece in our studio. The process typically takes 4–6 weeks. Learn more on our Bespoke page.

  • Can I use my own gemstones?

We work exclusively with stones sourced by our team to ensure quality and ethical standards. This allows us to guarantee the integrity of every piece we create.

  • How much does a custom piece cost?

Pricing depends on the stone grading, cutting complexity, and gold selection. We provide rough estimates during consultation and a final quote before production begins. Custom pieces don't necessarily cost more than ready-made — it depends entirely on your specifications.

  • Can I customize an existing design?

Absolutely. Many of our bespoke projects involve customizing existing designs with different stones, metals, or proportions. This is a great option if you love a design but want to make it your own.

  • Do you create engagement rings?

Yes, engagement rings are one of our specialties. We love helping couples create meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces. Whether you're looking for an opal, emerald, sapphire, or diamond center stone, we can bring your vision to life.

Jewelry Care

  • How should I clean my jewelry?

For gold, use mild soap and warm water, then dry with a soft cloth. For opals, simply wipe with a soft, damp cotton cloth — never use chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, or steam cleaners. See our full Jewelry Care guide for detailed instructions.

  • Are ultrasonic cleaners safe for my jewelry?

No, we do not recommend ultrasonic cleaners for any of our pieces, especially those containing opals or delicate gemstones. These devices can cause damage to stones and settings.

  • How should I store my jewelry?

Store pieces separately in soft pouches or lined compartments to prevent scratching. Keep jewelry in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

  • My piece has scratches. Can this be fixed?

Yes, most metals can be professionally repolished to restore their original finish. Contact us at admin@fadetoblackjewelry.com to discuss repair options.

  • When should I remove my jewelry?

Remove jewelry before swimming, exercising, showering, applying lotions or perfumes, and cleaning with household chemicals. Put jewelry on last when getting ready and remove it first when undressing.
