“Every exceptional stone is one of a kind — a diamond, an emerald, an opal, each with a life all its own. What we design around yours is built once, by hand, and never made again.”

For four decades our family has lived in the world of fine gems — sourcing, cutting, and setting rare stones by hand. Those relationships mean your piece can begin with almost anything: a brilliant diamond, an emerald with real depth, a sapphire, or a rare Australian opal from the fields where our story began. We don’t buy at auction or through a middleman — we go straight to the source. Whatever the stone, it reaches you through hands that have spent a lifetime among the best.

No two stones are alike, so no two pieces can be. In our Los Angeles studio the stone leads and the gold follows — a setting drawn by hand to a single stone’s shape, color, and character, in solid 14K or 18K gold. What you receive has never existed before and will never be made again: an heirloom from its first day, meant to be kept, worn, and one day handed down.

A bespoke piece is a series of choices made side by side — the stone first, then everything that frames it. Nothing is fixed until it feels right.
The stone — a diamond, an emerald, a sapphire, or a rare Australian opal, sourced for you through four decades in the trade.
The cut — each stone hand-cut to its own shape: freeform, oval, cushion, or pear.
The setting — bezel, solitaire, three-stone, or a form drawn for your stone alone.
The metal — 14K or 18K solid gold, in yellow, rose, or white.
The band — smooth, pavé-set, hand-engraved, or textured.
The finishing — a hidden stone, an engraving inside the band, a detail only you and the wearer will know.
If you can picture it, we can draw it.
Priced to the stone, never to a formula.
Because every stone is singular, so is every commission — its price set by the stone, the gold, and the work the design asks for. Because each piece is built around a single natural stone and made entirely by hand, we take on only a small number of commissions at a time. You’ll have a clear, detailed estimate — and no obligation — before a single line is committed to metal.

I grew up surrounded by the world of fine gems. Four decades of my family’s experience working with the top designers and fashion houses in the industry has given me not only a unique perspective, but the relationships to find the finest stones anywhere in the world — an exceptional diamond, an emerald with real depth, an opal with its own light that no one else will have — and the eye to know when one is truly rare.
When you commission a piece with Fade to Black, we work closely to find the perfect stone, then our skilled team of jewelers handcrafts it on the bench. Designing and working with our clients is one of the highlights of my work — there’s nothing better than seeing the perfect piece come to life.
